History

Outline

? Before Unification (BU)

The earliest records tell tales of clans living sparse existences. These rudimentary communities were scattered across the land with very little contact and almost no trade. Various dialects existed, hampering the growth of the communities.

580BU

In modern day Toldia, a warlord was uniting the communities. Through force and bronze weapons, the roots of The Kingdom were born.

540BU - 420BU

The establishment of the Toldian Kingdom, named after the Warlord Toldiath, took 80 years and during this time the Kingdom of Borlas was created. The Jurash Empire had also expanded it's borders to cover the south east reaches (Rentolthan).

420BU - 96BU

An uneasy friendship existed between the three powers with border skirmishes and raids common. Throughout the centuries many minor wars were fought with none of the powers gaining supremacy.

95BU

The turning point in history came when the Toldian smiths discovered the secret to working iron. This vastly superior metal could cut bronze swords in half. The Toldian King outfits the first soldiers with iron swords, the elite Draegors.

94BU

The King of Toldia outfits his entire army with iron after successful raids revealed the power of the iron swords and their effectiveness in battle. With this new weapon, the Kings eyes turn towards Borlas. In two months the Toldian forces had marched through the Modrain Forest and laid siege to the Bolas capital, Bormath. The Siege of Bormath takes 30 years and costs 50,000 lives.

95BU - 26BU

After 69 years of war Toldia defeats Borlas and turns is eyes eastwards, towards the Jurash Empire.

25BU - 1BU

Toldian forces close off the borders to the Jurash western territories (Rentolthan). With inferior forces, Jurash representatives attempt to bargain their way out of war. After 24 years of skirmishes, battles and negotiation, Toldia's top negotiator, Ren Tolth, convinces the Jurash Empire to give up their western lands in exchange for no war.

0 After Unification (AU)

The Kingdom was united. The Toldian King, upon assuming the Kingdom kingship, anointed his son to the Dukedom of Toldia. Borlas was renamed in honour of the Draegors to Bordael and their commander was named Duke. The former Jurash territory was renamed, in honour of Ren Tolth, to Rentolthan and Ren was named as Duke.

The King built his capital on Mymar Island and he named it Glyferie, in honour of his dead wife.

12AU

Duke Tolth ran roughshod over his duchy. Corruption and poverty became common place. The Duke threw massive parties at huge expense and was convinced that he was loved by everyone of his citizens. His advisers told him that everything was running fine, all the while embezzling money for themselves.

When he was visiting Fremith, he noticed that a lowly beggar could not recognise him. This inflamed his ego and upon returning to Tolth, he decreed that all towns must have "Ren" before the name. He began to see himself as larger than the King, a thought that would cost him his life. He decreed that all people must address him as "Your Highness".

The King took offense to the title and he quickly decided to have the Duke assassinated. He turned to his Intelligence Master, the highest level spy and assassin in the kingdom, to remove Ren Tolth but not to arouse suspicion.

The Intelligence Master paid a group of bandits to ambush the duke as he travelled. Two weeks later, while travelling to Ren Salume, Duke Tolth was ambushed and him and his entire retinue were slaughtered.

The King immediately ordered two companies of Draegors to the area, and using information provided by the Intelligence Master, found the bandits and killed them.

Upon their return they were showered with gifts and commendations for their brave actions. The King, without another son or logical replacement, appointed his daughter, Hathion, to the Duchess of Rentolthan. He decreed that to keep the Duchessdom, she must marry within a year. She did so and the new Duke commemorated their wedding by changing the name of the capital to Ren Hathion.

15AU - 262AU

Relations between the Crown and the Duchy's were cordial but they was always an underlying tension. The Dukes always felt that the King was holding his power over them. This came to a head when King Ramnar the 1st came into power when his father died unexpectedly.

263AU

Ramnar the 1st became the only king in history to be assassinated on the orders of the three Dukes. Ramnar was so obsessed with making The Kingdom the greatest the world have ever known that tax rates became unbearable and labourers that were working on the massive reconstruction project were basically slave labour with almost no wages. Scared for the future of The Kingdom the three Dukes met at the ruins in the middle of Lake Amorain. Here is was decided for the good of the The Kingdom that Ramnar had to be assassinated.

264AU

The three Dukes decided that they must all participate in the assassination. They massed their forces at the point where Lake Amorain empties into the River Saline. The Duke of Toldia then invited the King to Telmane, where a big feast was to thrown in honour of him. Ramnar immediately accepted and when his barge passed the hidden troop, Toldian catapults and Bordael and Rentolthan archers opened fire. The royal barge was reduced to ashes and every member of the retinue was killed. Ramnar the 1st was killed when a flaming payload from a catapult tore through his cabin.

The court back in Glyferie was in outrage but when troops from each of the duchy's moved in and seized Glyferie, they realised that fighting was futile.

At first it was thought that a committee of the the three Dukes could run The Kingdom but this was proven to be ineffective due to the constant wrangling. It was decided that the dead king's nephew, Joram, should be made king with an adviser from each of the duchy's. This meant that they had their opinions made known but the final decision rested with one person. This custom of three advisers has persisted through the ages and is still in use today.

320AU

Joram the 1st proved to be a capable king but it was his son, Joram the 2nd that took The Kingdom into a period of great prosperity. The line of Joram created the highways that are so integral to The Kingdom's economy. They also set unchangeable tax rates, and the economy prospered.

320Au - 1032AU

Kings were born, crowned and died. The people kept living their lives and The Kingdom prospered. Peace ruled the land.
